Preemies and Food Allergies???

I was reading about the statistics of children with food allergies.  In the United States I read that 1 in 13 children have food allergies.  Of those children, 40% have anaphylatic food allergies. (I posted one of the links to my information at the bottom of this post.)

But here is what I was wondering... of those 1 in 13 children, how many of these little ones were preemie babies? How many were born too soon? How many babies had not had the chance to develop strong enough immune systems? Steven was born at 36 weeks and 5 days. Bee was born at 33 weeks. They both have anaphylatic food allergies.  Our oldest also has environmental and insect stinging allergies. Is this at all related?

So, I researched the two to find if there is a correlation.

What I found were small studies that happened in 1995 and again in 2007. They both stated that low birth weight and being born premature have no correlation to developing food allergies. I was hoping for some more scientific studies to be found, but was unable to really find too much on the subject.

I remain, unconvinced. I am going to research some more to find more information. As I do, I will let you know :)

  1. I'm with you. Intuitively, it just seems like their is a correlation. There is a correlation to asthma and food allergies. There is a correlation to sterile environments and allergies. It was the first question that my husband asked when Owen was diagnosed with allergies because we don't know of others in our family with allergies. I have nearly 50 cousins and one of them has a child with a peanut allergies...Owen's got 3 of the 5 he's been tested for.

    1. I promise to keep doing some homework on the subject. I just can not seem to shake the thought that it must be related! I will be contacting my allergest to see if he has any recent information about it.
